This project with the Stoll Foundation was more than a typical workspace brief, it was an opportunity to support an organisation with a powerful legacy and a clear vision for the future. Joe, Soul Spaces co-founder discusses the thinking behind the design, how the brief took shape, and the principles that guided Soul Spaces throughout the process. From modernisation to mindful functionality, here’s a closer look at what went into creating a space truly fit for Stoll’s community.
What was the initial brief from Stoll Foundation, and what were they hoping to achieve with this space?
This was a monumental move for the STOLL foundation. The key elements of the brief were to modernise the workspace and provide their staff with an up-beat and thriving workplace. The space is a multi functioning one that needs to accommodate for staff, donors, trustees and their tenants.
How did this project align with Soul Spaces’ values and approach to workspace design?
Perfectly. The key reason we love our work is that it improves day to day lives and this project undoubtedly does that. The previous office was dated and uncomfortable, the current office for amenity, natural light and modern design rivals most.
How did you ensure the space was both functional and sensitive to the needs of the veterans and staff using it?
Our design team ensured the space took in to consideration visitors needs by ensuring the space accommodates for individuals with accessible needs. This includes the furniture choices, ensuring that all items are comfortable and suitable. The functional aspect of projects is always key to us, there is no point a project looks good but doesn’t work. The space works perfectly with a good flow between two units, amenity in each unit and desk space to suit quiet days and busy days.
What element of the final design are you personally most proud of?
I love the graphic wall that shows the immense history and success of the foundation.
In what ways does this project demonstrate what Soul Spaces does best.
Our approach is different to others. Rather than instantly focus on the commercials, we engage with the individuals. We forget ego and profit points and focus on the clients pressure points and how we can help. When a project aligns, we are able to be both helpful and profitable but if they don’t and we can at the very least be helpful, that’s fine too. We have an open door policy and we are happy to part advice and work with any industry.
If you could describe this project in three words, what would they be—and why?
PERFECT FOR STOLL! Ultimately that is all we are trying to do on every project, create a best in class product for that clients budget, brief and demands. This project is perfect for STOLL and we are very proud to have played a small part in their relocation as a foundation.
